World Down Syndrome Day—and every day—is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, support, and access to services that allow individuals with Down syndrome to live fully and independently. At Easterseals Children’s Academy East, we are lucky to have one very special student who embodies all of this and more: sweet, spirited Niami.
At just 3 years old, Niami has already touched countless hearts with her bright smile, joyful energy, and loving nature. She joined our program nearly a year ago and has become a beloved part of our community. Each day, she spends her morning in a special education classroom and the rest of the day in preschool, where she engages with peers and continues to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.
Niami's success is a true team effort. Her mom works closely with teachers and therapists to ensure she has the tools and support she needs to thrive. From speech and occupational therapy to physical therapy, Niami’s services are thoughtfully coordinated to match her needs while nurturing her independence.
Her mom shares that learning of Niami’s diagnosis during pregnancy brought a mix of emotions, but ultimately, it gave her time to prepare and embrace the journey ahead. Today, Niami is not only thriving—she’s the bright light of her family. She loves dancing, music, reading, and especially pretend cooking in her play kitchen. Shopping trips with her mom are a favorite activity, and she’s known for being affectionate, funny, and—like many 3-year-olds—a little bit stubborn when her routine is off!
Niami teaches all of us every day—about strength, resilience, and seeing the world through a lens of compassion and curiosity. Her journey is a beautiful reminder that with the right support, love, and high expectations, children with Down syndrome can achieve incredible things.
We celebrate Niami today and always—and we remain committed to building a more inclusive world where every child can shine.
